Great Blue Heron, Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge, Maryland
A Great Blue Heron (Ardea herodias) sees his dinner; otherwise known as the fish that got away. Great Blue Herons are the largest species of heron and live throughout the entire United States, preferring lakes, ponds, rivers, and marshes. Great Blue Herons catch fish by either using their large beak like tongs to grab fish out of the water or they will sometimes spear the fish with their beak.
