Coyote, Joshua Tree National Park, California
The coyote (Canis latrans) is found throughout North American and Central America. Coyotes are opportunistic omnivores, which may hunt for small prey such as rabbits, mice, and birds. Coyotes may also eat fruit, insects, carrion, lizards, or snakes. Coyotes in the desert tend to have lighter colored fur than those living in the mountains. This particular coyote posed for only a few seconds before leaping over a thorny desert bush and running off into the backcountry.
