Horseshoe Crabs Spawning, Delaware Bay, Delaware
As a species, horseshoe crabs predate the dinosaurs and have evolved little over the last 300 million years. Horseshoe crabs are important for medicine, as a compound in their blood is used by the pharmaceutical industry to detect the presence of bacteria in vaccines. Although horseshoe crabs may look scary, they are harmless and do not sting or bite.
