Yellow-crowned Night Heron, Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge, Florida
Yellow-crowned night herons (Nyctanassa violacea) are a smaller species of heron, which are nocturnal, in that they generally sleep during the day and hunt at night. They feed in the water, primarily eating fish, insects, frogs, or mollusks. Yellow-crowned night herons are found in the southeastern United States, along coastal areas and swamps.
