Sunset Light through Pfeiffer Arch, Big Sur, California
An amazing natural phenomenon occurs at Pfeiffer Beach in Big Sur, California for just a few weeks each year. In the winter, around the time of the winter solstice, the sun is at the perfect angle behind Pfeiffer Arch, such that if the horizon is clear with no clouds, a light beam shines through the arch. This causes an impressive orange glow to shine through the arch, also known as Keyhole Arch, just minutes before the sun sets. If the tide is right, ocean spray hitting the rocks may also be lit by the lightbeam, creating an impressive firework-like light display.
