Atlantic Puffin, Machias Seal Island, Maine
An Atlantic Puffin (Fratercula arctica) briefly rests from his swim as he momentarily steps on a piece of floating driftwood near Machias Seal Island in Maine. Puffins are pelagic birds that spend most of their life at sea, only coming ashore during the summer for raising their young in nests. Puffins are perhaps best known for their colorful bill and black and white plumage.
