Milky Way over Halemaumau Crater, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Hawaii
Halemaumau crater is within the Kilauea caldera, which has been active since March 2008 when a vent opened in the crater, causing a lava lake to form. Kilauea volcano has been erupting continuously since 1983. This photo was taken at night and shows the Milky Way galaxy and stars over the Halemaumau Crater, with the lava illuminating the sulfur dioxide smoke plume.
