Halemaumau Crater, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Big Island, Hawaii
A lava lake burns in Halemaumau crater, within the Kilauea caldera. Although the lava lake is constantly changing, Halemaumau crater has been an active lava site since March 2008 when a vent opened in the crater floor. Kilauea volcano has been erupting continuously since 1983. This photo was taken at night, such that the glow from the lava illuminates the clouds above Halemaumau Crater, and the stars peek through the clouds above.
